The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – 2024/25 Gameweeks #8 & #9
Wins against the Blues and Leipzig too, but against the Gunners there was just too much to do. Do claims about a Ballon d’Or mean the player doesn’t want to stay anymore? And in FPL we score for fun as our team remains number one.
The Good
The 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday. A first half penalty from Mo Salah and a second half tap-in from Curtis Jones was enough to pip their in-form visitors to the points.
As usual, this fixture didn’t go without incident. Cody Gakpo had a goal disallowed and Diogo Jota left the field with another injury after a first half collision. Curtis Jones also earned the side a second penalty, which was later denied after a VAR check.
All in all a good day at the office with the result putting the Reds back on top of the table, having slipped to second when Manchester City won earlier in the day. Elsewhere, Arsenal were humbled 2-0 by lowly Bournemouth.
The 2nd Good
Winning against RB Leipzig in the third game of this seasons Champions League after the 0-1 away victory.
Liverpool came out comfortable winners against the German side after a Darwin Núñez effort midway through the first half.
The Uruguayan put in a solid performance in his fourth start under Arne Slot. without wanting to use too many cliches Liverpool should rarely have been out of sight in this match but for some good goalkeeping from former Liverpool reserve keeper Peter Gulacsi.
Ultimately, what one would call a professional performance against, what on the night, was a pretty mediocre German Bundesliga team.
The (Not) Bad
The draw against Arsenal at the Emirates. Could have been worse!
Liverpool came from behind twice at the Emirates Stadium to claim a share of this boils against an inform Arsenal side.
Virgil van Dijk bought Liverpool level on 18 minutes before they fell behind yet again shortly before the break. As the clock ticked away, Mo Salah converted Darwin Núñez’s centre to earn Liverpool a point in this tough yet enthralling encounter.
The Ugly
Trent sound as if he’s off!!
When the Liverpool FC right back stated he wants to win the Balon d‘Or, to me at least, sounded like a veiled reference to joining the Spanish giants. Former Reds defender and now pundit, Jamie Carragher said he felt Trent sounded “…as if he is going to Real Madrid”
