The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – 2024/25 Gameweek #36
It’s finally out… Trent is going to Real Madrid. Or at least he’s confirmed he’s leaving Liverpool.
The Good
After 20 years the local lad has decided to call time on his Liverpool career. As sure as eggs is eggs, every LFC fan will have an opinion on the situation.
Personally, I wish him all the best. He’s been with the club long enough and he wants to play at the highest level. Fair play to him. The lure of Real Madrid – where it is expected he’ll land, would be difficult for anyone to turn down.
My wish would have been that he’d at least sign a contract so the club gets a fee and a return on the not-insignificant investment they’ve made in him over the years.
That said, Real are experts at exploiting the free transfer and I suspect their “come on a free or don’t come at all“ is quite an ultimatum. Plus of course, a share of the sizeable chunk of cash the club has saved in not having to pay a transfer fee.
The Bad
Liverpools performance against Arsenal yesterday. The Reds flew out of the blocks against their closest rivals and by the 22nd minute, were two goals to the good after a blistering two-minute spell.
Efforts from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz, put the Reds into what one would rightly call a comfortable lead. But, as someone once said “It’s a funny old game“.
In no laughable manner, Arsenal struck back twice in the second half. Firstly shortly after the restart, and as Liverpool inevitably tired and distracted by the mixed reception to Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s introduction, a second in the 70th minute.
The scorer of Arsenal‘s equaliser Mikel Merino was dismissed nine minutes later after a second bookable offence. Despite the numerical advantage and sustained pressure, Liverpool were unable to secure a winner.
2-2 in the end a fair result, given the position of these two teams in the league.
The Ugly
A section of Liverpool fans booed Trent Alexander-Arnold after he came on as a second-half substitute against Arsenal yesterday.
Personally, I think this was disrespectful not just to the player, but also the team. I would even go so far as to say these so-called fans handed the initiative to the visitors.
The want-away scouser came on in the 67th minute and Arsenal scored three minutes later.
Whatever these fans may think of Trent, so long as he’s in a red shirt, they should get behind him and the team. There’s plenty of time to dis him off after the game and going forward.
