Liverpool FC – Week 15 Review
Another week comes to a close with continuing dodgy form and a blast from the past. On the bright side at the team didn’t lose again. The good, the bad and none too shabby. Another week in review at the world’s favourite football club Liverpool FC.
The Good
For those of you who were around in the real glory days. The time of Bob Paisley, when the team simply steam rolled every opponent before them, and teams came to Anfield sure of only one thing… that they were going to lose. A rare treat appeared this week when the Guardian reported the discovery of the Liverpool legend on the This is Your Life show.
For those of you who were not, and thus, think I’ve lost my marbles: the show aired from 1955 to until 2007 and was hosted initially by Eamonn Andrews, then Michael Aspel and lately by uncle Trevor McDonald. To cut a (clearly) very long story short. The program presented the great and the good of sport and life at the time, with a look back at their life. Simple. But very, very effective. Participants included legendary figures such as Muhammad Ali, Nat “King” Cole, Henry Cooper, and another Liverpool Hero of the 80’s Kenny Dalglish. The list goes on… Even a fella called Bill Shankly.
Check it out and find out what a real football manager should be like. Stand aside Mourinho, Conti and Guardiola.
The Bad
This is without doubt, the recent performances. Not only did the team get a bloody nose at the hands of Bournemouth last week, they follow that up with a draw at home to strugglers West Ham yesterday. Having taken the lead through Adam Lallana’s after five minutes, you’d have been forgiven for regarding the previous weekend as a “blip”. However, in true Liverpool FC style, nothing could be further from the truth.
An equaliser from Dimitri Payet on 27 minutes and another from Michail Antonio 12
minutes later set the tone for the rest of the match. The hosts blushes were spared when Divock Origi stabbed home Sadio Mane’s cross after three minutes of the second half and (hopefully) a blocking from Jürgen Klopp.
Despite what seemed like 95% possession in the second half, and the visitors playing with 10 men – well 11 if you include Liverpool reject Andy Carroll, the hosts were unable to find a way through. The visiting defence, typically well-organised by Slaven Bilic.
Jürgen Klopp said after the game the team “Tried everything”. I’d disagree slightly because three shots in the whole 90 minutes suggests they could have “tried” a little more. To be fair, try they did. It just wasn’t their day.
The None Too Shabby
I haven’t come across anything that qualifies for the usual “Ugly” slot this week, so let’s
focus on something positive. The None Too Shabby. A phrase defined by the Urban Dictionary as: The condition of soemthing, meaning “Not bad”. The opposite of Shabby. Therefore, on the bright side, at least the team didn’t lose and remain in the top three going into week 16. Could be worse, as the world’s wealthiest man said.
Next up Liverpool travel to the north-east to face Middlesborough. Another potential banana-skin. One they could do well not to slip on if they wish to maintain the momentum.
