Liverpool F.C. vs Arsenal F.C. – Match Preview

Liverpool host Arsenal, at what will surely be, a packed Anfield, for the Barclays Premiership game this afternoon. Looking down the fixture list this is definitely the pick of the games for the last league matches of 2018.

Overview

All eyes will be on the hosts today to see if their unbeaten run can stretch to 20 games for the season. This will be a huge match for both sides. Arsenal will be hoping return to winning ways following their draw with Brighton & Hove Albion last time out.

Histrionics could well play a part here. Liverpool have reigned victorious in three of the last five meetings between the two sides at Anfielddrawing the other two.

Team News

James Milner remains the only major doubt among the regular first-team regulars. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip remain out with with a broken ankle and broken collarbone respectively.

Arsenal are currently second in the Premiership injury table. Not quite as interesting as the league table, but an achievement nonetheless. They’re nursing a string of injuries to their first team squad. Among them, Mesut Özil (knee injury), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (the dreaded broken Metatarsal), ho Monreal (Hamstring) and Hector Bellerin (Calf strain) being the most notable. Shkodran Mustafi is also doubtful.

Summary

We should be in for another cracker today. Both teams have plenty to play for. Liverpool to – at least – maintain their unbeaten run. For Arsenal, the fight for a place in the top-six is in full swing. The aforementioned last five games between these two have yielded no less than 24 goals, that’s an average of 4.8 goals per game. Not bad going. This game will be of interest for anyone wanting to watch a decent game of footy today, whether a fan of either side or not.

I don’t do predictions but if I did, I’d suggest 3-1 to Liverpool. This is a good time to play Arsenal due to their being in transition, and of course, injuries to a few influential players. Most notably Özil and Mkhitaryan. All being well, Liverpool can finish the year on a positive and victorious note.
