LFC 20/21 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly – Gameweek 3

The Gunners push all the way, but can’t top the Reds on their day. The fringe players weren’t quite in heaven, even though they scored seven. An ex-player who thought he knew, was taken down a peg or two. The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at the world’s favourite football club. Liverpool F.C.

The Good

Securing the third win of the season to keep up with the early pace setters following the 3-1 defeat of Arsenal. Goals from Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and a late effort from newbie Diogo Jota cancelled out Alexandre Lacazette’s opener after Robertson’s mistake.

In fairness, this was a huge win for Liverpool at this stage of the season. There are now four teams who are yet to lose a game. This makes for a very tight start to the season. Leicester, Aston Villa and the bluenoses are all unbeaten.

As they say in boxing “someone’s 0 has gotta go!” And up to now it’s not Liverpool’s, thankfully. This was a game I really wasn’t looking forward to. Mikel Arteta has done a fantastic job at Arsenal since becoming boss and his side has proved to be tough opponents for Liverpool in recent times.

Overall a deserved win for Liverpool against quality opposition.

The (Not) Bad

Beating Lincoln City 2-7 in the Carabao Cup during the week. A clinical display by the Champions’ fringe players. Two goals each from Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones, in addition to strikes from Xherdan Shaqiri, Marco Grujic and Divock Origi gave an emphatic victory over the Imps at Sincil Bank.

Two late goals for Lincoln prevented the Reds inflicting what would have been an undoubted drubbing of Michael Appleton’s side. There’s no need to go through every goal, save to say those from Minamino and Jones we’re first class.

The former showing why Liverpool chose to bring him in and what a prospect he’s shaping up to be. Same can be said for Jones who took his goals with a maturity beyond his years.

With every player doing his bit, I was particularly impressed by Grujic who played in the holding midfielder role. His poise on the ball was actually pretty impressive. Thiago Alcantara he certainly isn’t, but to be fair, he showed he is a quality player.

The Ugly

The look on Roy Keane’s face when Jürgen Klopp took him to task over his comments, following Liverpool coming from behind to beat Arsenal.

Did I hear right, Mr Keane said we had a sloppy performance tonight?

The former Manyoo and Republic of Ireland captain looked embarrassed and red-faced when Klopp asked in the post-match interview “Did I hear right, Mr Keane said we had a sloppy performance tonight? I could hear you already, did he say that?”

The Liverpool manager clearly sought to take Keane to task after implying that Liverpool were sloppy in their play. Apart from being totally disrespectful to an Arsenal side that forced Liverpool’s hand throughout, the Irishman’s comments were met with dismay.

To be fair, Keane ended the situation with a funny quip saying “…imagine if they’d have lost?!” Hats off Mr. Keane.
